What Is A Person Centred Approach?
We believe that all services delivered to older people should be done so with great care, and although we are primarily a home help service, we ensure that all our services are delivered in a very considered, personalised way, to ensure that the individual gets maximum benefit from their interactions with us.
We take time to nurture conversation, asking the client about themselves and taking time to truly listen and get to know them. A person centred approach focuses on what the person can do and not what they can't, meaning that they still have autonomy over their own lives, and that support is encouraging, engaging, appropriate and necessary.
A person centred approach also takes into consideration a person's likes, dislikes, traditions and values. We have a lovely client who laments the loss of her gardening ability, as gardening, and a love of flowers, was once a great passion of hers. We've reignited that love by bringing her a bunch of flowers every few weeks. We then encourage her to arrange them as a mindful little activity. We talk about the garden often, and listen to her stories of happy summers spent in the vegetable patch. When it is warmer we will take her outside for afternoon tea. It is little considerations like this, paired with knowledge about the client, that enables us to offer a person centred approach and elevate our service to an exemplary level.
A person centred approach is hugely beneficial as it allows our clients to feel included, fulfilled and happy, thus having a positive effect on both physical and mental health.
